Best Bargain Buy (hmm, alliteration) |
|
Mine would have to be...
The whole of the Complete Blues from Snapper. I have nine single cds, and one box of four (the entire recorded works of Blind Willie McTell) at only £5 and £10 each respectively. Highly recommended.
What're you lot's best cd(s) for a cheap price?
Peace
J

My best deal was Robert Johnson - I got "The Complete Recordings" and "King of the Delta Blues Singers" together for eight quid including postage. I thought that was pretty reasonable for the whole catalogue plus the restored and respeeded issues!

Recently I got Hot Foot Powder and the Robert Johnson Songbook both by The Peter Green Splinter Group, as a two CD set for £4 inc p&p from play.com.
Both great CDs that I have wanted for a while and at the time they were selling the individual CDs for £7.99 each - bargain.
Cheers,
Adrian

Have you got the slowed down version? There is a theory that the tapes of Johnson were played at the wrong speed when transfered from disc and that he sould be 20% slower. Some of it sounds convincing, but for ot all to br wong I don't think so. A CD can be bought from http://www.touched.co.uk/press/rjnote.html where more information is also available.
Best musical bargin? Fender Stratocaster for £175 from a juke shop.

Yeah, I think I got a couple of re-speeded tracks in there (not sure if they were on those CDs or if I downloaded them though). Fascinating theory and lots of argument about exactly what speed folks believe they should be played at. I'm guessing that recordings made in hotel rooms in a hurry were probably a bit variable anyway, and domestic playback machines of the time (gramophones) certainly were.
I did hear that varying the speed was often deliberate. There was a limit of 2-3 minutes you could fit on a recording at the time, so if a piece was too long and there was a problem with shortening it they would simply run the equipment slow to make it all fit!
I'd love to get hold of an original 78 disc, and compare the pitch of the 'recorded' background noise with the equal 'recorded' background noise from a recording of known speed from the same time. In theory the nature of the noise should be similar, so re-pitch the unknown (by varying its speed) to match the known and hey presto, that should be right!
Hey, a Fender Strat for £175! Fantastic! Do you still have it? Please don't tell me it was pre CBS or I might just cry! I missed out on an original '57 Duo-Sonic (my fave Fender model) in a junk shop in Scotland for £100 a couple of years ago! Oh well, I got my '95 Duo new for £105 so I guess I can't complain!
See ya, Davey.

Yes I stil have the Fender, though the wammy bar drives me crazy, it's far too tempting not to use but puts the whole thing out of tune too quickly.
I'd love an original RJ 78 too, but at $5000 they are a tad expensive.
