Copies of Steves Guitars |
|
Anyone tried making a copy of one of Steve's guitars? Currently trying to make a copy of the 3 string trance wonder. Going slowly at the momet as we've recently moved house and my workshop is the disused outside toilet. I'll post picutres as the project develops.

Hey Steve, what was the donor instrument (or is it scratch built?). I'll look forward to seeing the results! I bet its a proper job unlike the messing about I've done over the years!
I haven't got any copies - but I did make three 'floorboard 2-string diddly-bo's' last year - one I kept, one went to an old friend and one went to Steve. None are copies, they are literally cut from the same board! Oh, and I knocked up two little 3 string electric uke's and Steve has one of those too! Again, not copies, but twins, though I deliberately made them all just a little bit different!
Although not copies of any of Steve's guitars I do have a couple of 3 string guitars - an old '61 Hofner President that had suffered a broken neck. Didn't know what to do with it as it couldn't take the stress of 6 strings... but 3-strings and it's happy. I've also a 3 string semi built out of bits from my old Morris Minor and a British Airways Concorde (yes, really) - that aint like nothing else! Ha.
I love the sound of the 3-string, and although my rubbish hands don't let me play proper guitar any more I can at least make a noise with 3 strings and a bottle neck!
I think Jim did something similar with a cigar box - hey Jim you out there buddy? Remind us about your Cigar boxes if you get five minutes!
Cheers Steve, looking forward to seeing (and hearing?) the results of your labours!
Davey.

Well, I made a 3 stringer out of a shitty old electric (it's a Columbus Series 1 apparently...) and I made a Cigar Box out of wood, and then turned it into a 1 string CBG. Now re-strung the electric, and hopefully going to make a (fretted) 3 string trance cigar box guitar!
And there's the brief history

Hey Jim, I seem to remember the dog hisself has one of your fine instruments in his collection or am I mistaken? I remember you posted pics of your CBG on the old forum - real nice!
Cheers, Davey.

I've no idea what the donor guitar was, it's Japanise and was an unfinished project bought for a few pounds from eBay . The shape looks right, the hole for the controls is a little large and the Fender type neck is rather crappy, but it'll do. It had been painted sparkly blue but is now stipped to the wood awaiting further work.
Made a diddley bow out of part of my old shed's door, plays OK, and a 3 string thing out of a drawer and an old neck, both have an 'interesting' sound.
Also have an old Stella 3 string which is strung with heavy gauge strings and I like to muck about with the tuning for that. This was inspired by the Presidents of the United States, the band not the idiots, rather then Steve.

Yep, Steve is the proud owner of the No-Fi Mark II, he said he liked the feel, he even recognised me in the crowd and gave me a hug (cos Joe C had given it to him, instead of me personally, cos it was right before his set).
I've got a Mark III on the go for Duke Garwood, but i told him I'd have it for last summer, oops! lol
I've stick some pics up later!
Jim

The 3 String Trance Wonder is still a country mile from completion. Its had a paint job and I think I now have all the parts. However, still no work shop and the British summer was so wet I have been unable to work outside - so next year looks more likely. I have also found out that to celebrate becoming 50 instead of having a party or going balooning or something equally 'once in a liftetime' ish I am going to become a dad. So this could put the project even further back.

Hey Steve,
glad the project's progressing - even if it is a bit slowly. Often the best way! Have you any pics of it so far?
Wow, congratulations on both your 50th birthday and the forthcoming addition to your family. Great news, and much better than a balloon ride! But yeah, might have to add about 18 years to the construction time for the geeetaar! hehe!
Cheers, Davey.

Steve's cigar box guitar ? |
|
Anybody tell me what cigar box is used in Steve's cigar box guitar. Pictures would also be a great help.
Many thanks,
Alan.
